Peter Siddle has defended Kagiso Rabada, saying he loves the way the fiery South African paceman approaches Test cricket.

But the veteran Australian fast bowler said Rabada should channel his emotions better.

The South African is in trouble for bumping Australian captain Steve Smith in the second Test and could be banned for the rest of the series.

"It's all the emotion of the game, and the challenges of Test cricket. I love the way he goes about it," Siddle said.

"You want to see the star players out on the field - I know he does push the boundaries (and he) probably has got to control himself a little bit at different times.

"You still have to be pretty controlled. I know he does push the boundaries quite a lot, but I do enjoy watching him, how we goes about it."

Siddle added there was no need for Rabada to make contact with Smith.

"There are times you do push it a little bit and Rabada knocking in to Smithy, it's easy to go around him," he said.

"Maybe give him a bit of lip, but steer clear of him, there's no need to touch."
