Siddle overcomes heartache and back-ache

Australia's Peter Siddle hit the winning runs in the third Test despite heartache and a back ache.

Peter Siddle has overcome heartache and back-ache to hit the winning runs in Australia's gripping Test triumph against New Zealand.

Siddle's grandmother passed away overnight - the day after he took his 200th Test wicket.

The paceman wore two black arm-bands, one for his beloved Nan and the other for Phillip Hughes.

He also wore protective strapping around his lower back after suffering spasms during New Zealand's first innings.

While typically tenacious with the ball, Siddle's crowning moment came with the bat: he struck the winning runs to deliver Australia a tense three-wicket victory and 2-0 series win.

"It is always tough losing someone close to you and we got around Sids this morning," captain Steve Smith said.

"He came out and gave it his all ... like he always does.

"It was great to see him get 200 Test wickets. That is an amazing feat and he should be really proud of the way he has performed over the last couple of days.

"He he has done a terrific job to be able to fight through that and everything else that has gone on this week to give a performance like he did."

Siddle tweaked his back when slipping in the field on Friday but Smith didn't expect the injury to rule the Victorian out of the first Test against the West Indies starting December 10 in Hobart.

"It's just a little spasm ... with the 10-day break between Test matches, I think he'll be okay," Smith said.
