Hearings will continue to form a fuller picture of what happened and why during Sydney's Lindt Cafe siege.

Several details became clearer on the opening day of a coronial inquest into the deaths of hostages Katrina Dawson and Tori Johnson, and gunman Man Monis, on Thursday.

Police let off 11 flash grenades as they stormed the cafe in the early hours of December 16, and they fired 22 shots.

Afterwards, Monis lay dead with 13 bullet wounds, including two to the head.

Ms Dawson was hit by six ricocheted fragments of police bullets.

Minutes earlier, Monis had shot Mr Johnson at close range after making the cafe manager kneel.

Witnesses are expected to give evidence at a range of hearings, with dates and locations yet to be set.
