Silver Ferns still untested

How the Silver Ferns perform under intense defensive pressure remains something of an unknown, coach Waimarama Taumaunu says.

Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu has ticked off a few items on her to-do list over the last week, but the biggest question has yet to be answered.

She's happy enough with three big wins in six days, the latest a 67-28 victory over South Africa in Auckland on Tuesday.

A series of different attacking and defensive combinations have been tested as the Silver Ferns try to bed in a high volume, fearless style of play before their World Cup kicks off against Barbados on August 7.

"I'm pleased with what I've seen," Taumaunu said.

"I think we're letting the ball go, looking forward a lot more, checking the circle and trying some risky passes.

"And from a statistical point of view, we've sat at 80 or above in terms of our accuracy, which is something we haven't done for a little while."

However, there's one aspect of play that's untested, and will probably remain so until the business end of the 10-day competition.

The Silver Ferns haven't had the chance to see how they perform under pressure, with a 91-61 win over Fiji last week followed by two big victories against world No.6 South Africa.

Taumaunu admits New Zealand's reaction under the sort of intense pressure exerted by top teams like Australia, England or Jamaica is something of an unknown.

"I think they're going to be up to it, but we won't know until it actually hits," she said.

"We're focused on ourselves, putting out our best performance, meeting our own targets and doing that as the competition ratchets up.

"We're aware that we haven't been tested to the extent we're going to be."

One other plus ticked off in the final run-in to Sydney has been the performance of shooter Bailey Mes.

The 15-cap relative newcomer has established herself as Taumaunu's first-string shooter, averaging comfortably over 80 per cent accuracy across the three games.

Taumaunu says Mes fit the bill in terms of volume, rebounding, shooting accuracy and ease of access for her midcourt.

"She missed a few shots, but we only lost three rebounds in total for the whole game offensively.

"Bailey has cemented herself as the No.1 shooter."
