Simpson wins world champs high diving

Rachelle Simpson has beaten defending champion and fellow American Cesilie Carlton in the women's high diving at the world titles in Russia.

The United States won gold and silver in women's high diving at the world championships on Tuesday as Rachelle Simpson beat defending champion Cesilie Carlton to the top spot.

Diving last into the Kazanka river off the 20-metre board in the final round, former gymnast Simpson landed the highest-scoring dive of the competition - earning 102 points for a total of 258.70 from three rounds.

Carlton finished on 237.35 after a lengthy wait for her scores in the final round, narrowly beating bronze medallist Yana Nesterova of Belarus on 233.10.

It is high diving's second appearance at the world championships. Carlton won on the 2013 debut in Barcelona.
