Australian singer and 'Grease' star Rob Mills has apologised after posting a homophobic image on social media after the AFL Grand Final at the weekend.

Mills, who came to prominence after appearing on reality singing contest Australian Idol, posted the image - of a Hawthorn Lego figurine bending over a Sydney Swans Lego figurine - to the social media website on Saturday night.

Under the image he posted the hashtags: #hilarious #criticssaidwhaaaaaat #b2b and #alwayshawthorn.

Many were quick to condemn Mills and the picture as homophobic and offensive.
While others jumped to the star's defence.
On Sunday, Mills issued an "unreserved" apology in a statement on his website.

"I apologise unreservedly for the photo I tweeted yesterday – it was immature and inappropriate," he wrote.

"In the excitement of celebrating the Hawks' grand final win, I didn't think about the homophobic implications of the image."

"This incident probably shows how entrenched inadvertent homophobia is in our culture.

"As a long-time supporter of the rights of Australia's gay community, it's not good enough and I'm ashamed if I have contributed to it, even in a small way."
The original Instagram post has since been deleted.
