Singh whacks Australian golf's prize money

Three-time major winner Vijay Singh says the fact the Australian Open has less prizemoney than the Fiji International needs to be addressed.

Former golf world No.1 Vijay Singh has taken aim at the prize money on offer in Australian golf.

The three-time major winner teed off at the money available in Australian tournaments after the opening round of the $1.5 million Fiji International on Thursday.

Singh, who has returned home to play on the Natadola Bay course he redesigned, compared the purse to that of the Australian Open, which was worth $1.25 million last year.

"The economy of Fiji compared to Australia is worlds apart, yet we have the biggest golf tournament in this part of the world," Singh said.

"I think Australia should take a hint from that and come up with a tournament that is better.

"This tournament has more prize money than the Australian Open - that's ridiculous really."

In terms of prize money it is on par with last year's Australian PGA Championship, while the $1.75 million World Super 6 in Perth is the Australasian Tour's richest event.

Singh called for administrators to do more to reward Australian talent with more money for their home events.

"I think the sponsors in Australia and the committee itself should come up with more tournaments in Australia," Singh said.

"You have so many great players coming out of Australia, you have to have more tournaments, better tournaments really."

The Fiji International and the World Super 6 are tri-sanctioned by the Australasian, European and Asian Tours.

The Open is co-sanctioned by the Asian and Australasian Tours, while the PGA Championship is a European and Australasian tour event.
