'Sinkhole' repair on water main complete

Repair work on a busy Brisbane road that was damaged after a water main burst and cracked the bitumen has been completed.

Repairs on a burst water main in Brisbane's east are complete.

The rupture occurred on Lytton Road between the Gateway Motorway and Creek Road, in Murarrie, just after 3am on Friday and caused significant damage to a large area of the roadway.

It then developed into a larger traffic hazard - which the Queensland Police Facebook page warned of as a "super sinkhole" - about two lanes wide.

Police had predicted it would take at least five hours to fix the road given the "tremendous" amount of water unleashed, which cracked and lifted the bitumen.

As of 6pm, all lanes on Lytton Road were reopened and repairs were complete by the evening, according to a statement from Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU).

They thanked drivers for their patience while the urgent repairs were being carried out.

Earlier, QUU clarified initial reports describing the site as a "sinkhole" were not technically correct.

"Whilst the road surface has been damaged, there was no sinkhole," they said.
