Former Liberal minister Arthur Sinodinos says he will support a motion to spill the party's leadership.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Sunday announced the spill motion would be brought forward a day to Monday.

"I believe we have to have this discussion," Senator Sinodinos said in an interview with the ABC on Sunday.

Senator Sinodinos, the former assistant treasurer and adviser to prime minister John Howard, said he was disappointed with the decision to move the meeting forward.

"(Tuesday) is the normal time for these matters to be considered - it gives us proper in-depth discussion of the issues," he said.

"It may be for the convenience of parliament but it would be better to show respect for colleagues by sticking to the normal time."
