Six people have been killed in an avalanche in the French Alps, Hautes-Alpes region prefect Pierre Besnard says.
The first three victims were found in the early morning hours on Sunday, Besnard said, adding that all the people killed were experienced skiers who belonged to a club.
The victims were all French and ranged in age from 50 to 70.
Other members of the ski club reported the six missing when they failed to return from an outing that started at the Ceillac ski station.
An avalanche alert of three - on a scale of one to five - had been issued, a warning level that is "high but not at its maximum," Besnard told BFM TV.
The situation is still dangerous and skiers should avoid the area for the next few days, the official said.
