The Sydney Sixers have signed Greg Shipperd, Australia's most successful domestic T20 cricket coach, for the summer's Big Bash League season.

Shipperd helped Victoria to four interstate T20 titles and also led the Melbourne Stars to the semi-finals in all four BBL tournaments before they opted for former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as their coach for next season.

Shipperd said he was planning to refine, rather than make any wholesale changes, to the style that took the Sixers to three of the last four BBL semi-finals and helped them win the inaugural tournament.

"It's an excellent team ... there's some great coaching opportunities with some of the really emerging young players that I'm very excited about and it's got a nice balance of experience and youth that I really enjoy," said Shipperd.

Shipperd takes over from Trevor Bayliss who has just led England to victory over Australia in the Ashes.
