Skiers lose Sochi non-selection appeal

Slalom skiers Mike Rishworth and Luke Laidlaw have lost an appeal against their non-selection in the Australian team for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed an appeal by slalom skiers Mike Rishworth and Luke Laidlaw over their non-selection in the Australian team for February's Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

Tuesday's ruling in Melbourne by CAS Arbitrator Malcolm Holmes QC follows Ski and Snowboard Australia's (SSA) non-nomination of Rishworth and Laidlaw to the Australian Olympic Committee for selection in the Sochi squad.

Emily Bamford and Lavinia Chrystal have been named in the Australian team, taking the total number of athletes to 60 - the country's largest for a Winter Games.

It easily tops the 40-athlete squads from the past two Games.

Australia are eyeing off four to five medals, which would eclipse the three-medal haul in Vancouver four years ago.
