In one of the Tour de France's toughest days, an Irishman has outlasted all comers to win the 168-point-five kilometre ninth stage after surviving on a breakaway through the Pyrenees mountains.

 

But as strong as Garmin Sharp rider Dan Martin's win was, overall leader Chris Froome's Team Sky looked fragile, suggesting the Briton's victory may not be as certain as some had thought.
