Slalom record holder Schild retires

Austrian skier Marlies Schild has announced her retirement.

Austrian skier Marlies Schild is retiring, less than a year after setting the women's record for most World Cup slalom wins.

The 33-year-old Schild said: "The time has come for a new chapter in my life. My biggest wish is to have a family."

Schild won her 35th career slalom event in Lienz in December, beating a 19-year-old best mark from Switzerland's Vreni Schneider.

Schild earned four crystal globes as the season's best slalom skier and became the discipline's world champion in 2011.

She also won four Olympic medals but failed to take gold.

Her career has been marred by injuries. She missed the entire 2008-2009 campaign due to a broken left lower leg and was out for months after damaging her right knee in 2012.
