Slater to decide future after pre-season

Melbourne's Billy Slater won't decide if he will return to the NRL until he gets a pre-season under his belt.

Billy Slater will wait until the end of next year's pre-season before making a call on his future.

The Melbourne No.1 remains hopeful of making a return to the NRL after his second shoulder reconstruction in as many years, but he says he's unlikely to be certain until well into 2017.

"I'll probably go through the whole pre-season and still not make a decision," he told RSN Radio in Melbourne.

"I think once it's time to play next year I will know in my mind what I want to do to push forward."

The 278-game NRL veteran visited his surgeon again last week for further scans on his right shoulder, and was told he was on track for a full recovery.

However, given he returned to the field in round one only to discover 2015's operation wasn't a complete success, he refuses to take anything for granted.

"I'm on the right track and given everything goes well I'll be on the field next year," he said.

"(But) unfortunately I'm not in the clear yet. I obviously got some news this year when I did have the surgery that possibly that could be the end.

"If it doesn't heal and things don't go my way then I may have played my last game."

The 32-year-old, who has played just one match since last May, also indicated he planned to play in State of Origin for Queensland next season, provided he returns to the field.
