Slopestyle injuries a worry - IOC

The rails and boxes used in the new slopestyle events at the Sochi Winter Olympics produced an unacceptable level of injuries according to the IOC.

Maybe American halfpipe hero Shaun White was right all along.

An International Olympic Committee official charged with monitoring injury rates at the Winter Games says the new discipline of slopestyle produced an "unacceptably high" number of injuries in its debut at the Sochi Olympics and should be dropped in future if that doesn't improve.

In an interview, Lars Engebretsen said injury rates in ski and snowboard slopestyle were higher than for any other discipline in Sochi.

Asked if slopestyle could lose its Olympic spot, Engebretsen replied: "That's the potential.

"The only reason why slopestyle should be taken, could be taken out is the safety concerns."

Snowboarder White withdrew from the slopestyle event in Sochi, saying "the potential risk of injury is a bit too much."

The discipline involves skiing or boarding on rails and boxes dotted along a slope.

Engebretsen is head of scientific activities at the IOC's medical and scientific department.
