Small business gets more protection

Small businesses will be given the same protection as consumers against unfair contracts imposed by big companies.

Small Business Minister Bruce Billson says the move is designed to ensure small businesses are protected from unfair contracts presented by big businesses.

"Small businesses have told us they have been subjected to unfair terms in standard form contracts, which are being presented by big business on a 'take it or leave it' basis, with little or no ability to vary the terms," he said.

Meanwhile, the government will provide $15 million in funding to help small exporters deal with the cost of sending their goods overseas in the next four years.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said small exporters in the meat, dairy, fish, horticulture and grain industries would be eligible for the rebate.

The government will also provide $2.8 million over the next four years to help small businesses bid for government contracts and establish a Small Business Ombudsman to help deal with disputes with the Commonwealth.
