Small business wary of outlook: survey

Small firms are not happy about the economic outlook even though they are the major beneficiary of the latest federal budget.

The promise of a tax cut doesn't seem to be enough to lift the mood of small business.

A new survey has found small and medium-sized enterprises are still concerned about the underlying strength of the economy.

The boss of business software provider MYOB, Tim Reed, says that should be a wake-up call for all politicians heading into the July 2 election.

"It reinforces the need for policies that will stimulate the economy and lead to growth," Mr Reed said on Thursday, releasing the latest MYOB business monitor.

The survey of more than 1000 business owners found 42 per cent believed the economy would decline over the next 12 months with only 24 per cent optimistic about the future.

Two in five operators expected their revenue to remain the same over the next 12 months, compared to nearly a third that expecting an improvement.

"We had been looking for signs of improvement ... uncertainty from the election may be contributing to this unease," Mr Reed said.

The Turnbull government has promised from July 1 the small business tax rate will be cut to 27.5 per cent from 28.5 per cent and the definition of a small firm increased to a turnover of $10 billion from $2 million.

That will allow more firms to also benefit from the $20,000 instant asset write-off for equipment purchases before the measure expires in mid-2017.

Further incremental cuts are planned over the next 10 years ending with a 25 per cent company tax rate for all businesses.

Labor supports the cut to 27.5 per cent but only for small business with a $2 million turnover.
