Small swell hampers world surf event

World Surf League organisers only have four days remaining in the tournament window to complete the season opener on the Gold Coast after another lay day.

Organisers have once again been left frustrated with another lay day called at the World Surf League opener on the Gold Coast.

Despite hopes the men's second round could be held at Snapper Rocks on Saturday, organisers were forced to abandon the day when a forecast swell from the south failed to deliver.

It means there is just four days left in the tournament window to complete both the men's and women's competitions.

Only three days since the window opened on February 28 have actually featured competition with the women's draw up to the quarter-finals but the men's competition yet to even get past the second round.

There are reports nearby Duranbah Bay could hold some of the competition's heats before a push to get the finals held back at Snapper Rocks.

World Surf League commissioner Kieren Perrow was still confident of completing the tournament inside the window.

"We'll be back tomorrow," Perrow said.

"Hopefully, with that swell pushing up we'll have some contestable waves in the morning."

When the men's competition finally does resume, former world champions Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater will be aiming to avoid an early elimination after first round losses.

Fanning will take on American wildcard Dane Reynolds while 11-time world champion Kelly Slater is facing off with trials winner Jack Freestone.

Organisers will meet and make their next call at 7.30am AEST on Sunday morning.
