Small swell keeps Pipe Masters on ice

A second lay day has been called at the season-ending Pipe Masters, delaying Mick Fanning's bid to win his third world surfing title.

As expected, a small swell has prompted organisers to call a second straight lay-day at the season-ending Pipe Masters in Hawaii.

ASP officials still expect to resume the event on Oahu's north shore on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) when Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater will battle for surfing's world crown.

"As expected we've only got small surf this morning and have called competition off for today," Marty Thomas, Pipe Masters contest director said on Thursday.

"We have an excellent forecast on the horizon for this weekend and will probably run the final day on Saturday."

Australian Fanning is seeking a third title and American Slater a 12th.

Slater has already qualified for the quarter-finals of the event that he needs to win to secure the championship.

Fanning must survive a round-five clash with American CJ Hobgood to make the quarters.

The Australian leads the championship and can clinch the title by making the semi-finals.
