Smartphone users could play a part in saving Australia's dwindling turtle population.

Launched on World Turtle Day, TurtleSAT is a free app designed to track the creatures' activity.

By dropping a pin on a map when they spot a turtle, users can contribute data to what scientists say will be Australia's biggest study of freshwater turtles.

University of Western Sydney zoologist Ricky Spencer is one of the app's creators.

He told Ella Archibald-Binge he hopes the technology will stop the decline of the country's turtle population.
