Smith banned for throwing soup at coach

ESPN has reported that Cavaliers guard JR Smith was suspended from a match against Philadelphia for throwing a bowl of soup at an assistant coach.

JR Smith was suspended for Cleveland's game against the Philadelphia 76ers as punishment for throwing a bowl of soup at Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones.

ESPN reported the details of the suspension Friday morning. The Cavaliers announced the suspension for "conduct detrimental" on Thursday.

Coach Tyronn Lue said before the game against the 76ers that Smith was suspended for something that happened after shootaround Thursday morning but didn't offer specifics. He added that Smith will be ready for practice Friday and return for the team's game against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.

Rodney Hood started in Smith's place against the Sixers and scored 11 points.

Smith is averaging 8.3 points and 1.9 assists in 59 games (56 starts) this season. The 32-year-old has seen his playing time dip in the team's last three games, getting a season-low 15 minutes on the court against the Memphis Grizzlies last Friday.
