They have spent 15 NRL season togethers and even share a birthday but Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith says he doesn't have a clue if Billy Slater will play on in 2018.

Slater only scored one try in Melbourne 64-6 romp over South Sydney but had a hand in many of the 10 others in another shining display.

The 34-year-old says he is still to make a decision on his playing future and hasn't been giving any hints away, even to his best mate.

"It's really hard to get any sort of indication on what he's going to do," Smith said.

"Some weeks he's fine and he gets around with a bounce in his step and other weeks he mopes around a bit because his body is bashed up."

Smith, who is signed until the end of 2018, said he would love to have Slater alongside him for that season but didn't expect the Test fullback to make a call any time soon.

"I don't want to put any pressure on him as he's given enough and done enough in the game and for this club to make a decision for him," Smith said.

"We'd all love for him to play on, even fans of other teams love watching Billy play."
