A fire is burning out of control in discarded rubber and plastics at a landfill in Melbourne's west.
More than 50 firefighters are battling the blaze in Brooklyn which began about 7.30pm and is spewing acrid black smoke over surrounding suburbs.
The MFB says there is no threat to communities but is warning residents in Brooklyn, Braybrook, Sunshine, Sunshine West, Tottenham, West Footscray to be aware of the smoke.
MFB spokeswoman Meg Rayner says the cause of the fire is not yet known.
"Recycled rubber and plastics are on fire and there's quite a bit of smoke issuing from it, which is why we've put out the community warning," she said.
It's expected firefighters will work most of the night to control the blaze.
People with heart or lung conditions including asthma, children, pregnant woman and older people are more sensitive to the effects of breathing smoke, the MFB warns.
Those with heart and lung conditions are advised to follow their treatment plan and phone Nurse On Call if they experience symptoms from smoke exposure.
