Poor roads mean higher costs, and bad roads in the region have been blamed for hampering renal dialysis services.

This has prompted the federal and state government to pledge $106 million in improvements.

But state Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ian Hunter says it'll be at least a year before work begins because of fears that new roads could become a gateway for alcohol and drugs.

He told Karen Ashford the community must be fully consulted on the plans.
