Sneak peek of Jolie film airs in US

A sneak peek of Angelina Jolie's new film Unbroken has aired to US television audiences watching the Winter Olympics.

American network NBC showed the preview of the war film, based on Laura Hillenbrand's 2010 book of the same name, on Sunday during its coverage of the Sochi Games.

Directed by Jolie and starring Jack O'Connell from the British TV series Skins, the film takes a look at the true story of former US Olympic runner Louis Zamperini who was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II.

Unbroken is the third film directed by Jolie, after the 2011 drama In the Land of Blood and Honey and the documentary A Place in Time.

* Unbroken is out in Australian cinemas on Boxing Day 2014.
