Snoopy licence plates to benefit museums

Jean Schulz, the widow of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, is allowing California to use Snoopy's image on licence plates without paying royalties.

A smiling Snoopy is making his way onto California licence plates to raise money for museums and related attractions.

The plates initially cost $US50 ($A56) or $US98 ($A110) for personalised versions, with a lower price for renewing annually.

Proceeds will fund grants for California's 1,400 museums, science centres, zoos, aquariums and children's museums, to be administered by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.

The plate design was revealed on Thursday during a news conference hosted by the author of the licence plate bill, Democratic Assemblywoman Toni Atkins of San Diego.

The state will not begin making them until it has received 7500 applications.
