The Sunshine State is quickly transforming into a frosty state thanks to an icy cold snap moving across southeast Australia that's brought gusty winds and a chance of snow.

Temperatures in Brisbane dipped to a low of 11C on Saturday, with the mercury expected to drop to 7C on Monday and Tuesday, and 5C on Wednesday.

The blast of Antarctic air delivering snow and strong winds in parts of Victoria and NSW has narrowly missed Queensland this weekend but parts of the state can still expect to see snow on Monday.

It's the first time in two years that it could snow in parts of Queensland.

"We're going to see some pretty cold temperatures over the next few days," Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sean Fitzgerald told AAP.

"There is a chance we may get some snow in the southern parts of the Darling Downs (on Monday), quite possibly.

However, if it does snow, the ground is likely to be covered in sleet rather than fine, powdery snowflakes.

The dry air from southerly winds also mean there'll be more frost in some regions, particularly paddock and grazing areas, and sheep farmers are being warned there is a high risk to exposed lambs and sheep.
