The first gold medal of the Sochi Winter Olympics has been awarded to Sage Kotsenburg of the United States in men's slopestyle.
Kotsenburg only qualified for the final in the second chance semi-finals, but pipped Staale Sandbech of Norway and Canada's Mark McMorris in the fastest time.
But Norway heads the tally with two gold, a silver and a bronze.
Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen has equalled the record for Winter Olympic medals when victory in the sprint took him to 12 for his career.
The 40-year-old has also become the oldest gold medallist in an individual event in Games history.
"I hope all the time but there are so many good athletes and when I saw Martin Fourcade (France) and some other favourites doesn't do it I may think that it's possible today because I was fast on the skis. I don't shoot optimal but I was fast on skis and that was good enough to win."
His compatriot Marit Bjoergen has won her fourth Olympic title and became the most successful female Norwegian Olympian in history, after taking the first cross-country skiing gold of the Games in the women's skiathlon.
The Netherlands and Canada sit just behind Norway with one of each medal.
Sven Kramer of the Netherlands opened the Sochi Games speedskating competition in flying style by successfully defending his 5,000 metres title in an Olympic record time.
Kramer clocked six minutes, 10.76 seconds over the distance, with compatriots Jan Blokhuijsen claiming silver and Jorrit Bergsma the bronze to make it a Dutch clean sweep.
These Dutch fans have told the BBC the result was expected in what is a national sport.
"Well it's just something from our nationality. Everybody does speed skating. You learn when you're young," said one fan. "It's almost as popular as football."
Australia's Britt Cox has skied superbly to finish fifth in the moguls.
Canada claimed a one-two in the event with sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe while 2010 Games champion, American Hannah Kearney, finished third.
Speaking to Channel 10 after her event, Cox says she's thrilled with how she skied.
"I'm just over the moon right now, so happy with my skiing tonight. Honestly, I had to fight for it, I had to really work hard for that super final tonight. I qualified quite far down and I needed to work my up and made the adjustments with my skiing, so really happy."
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Austrian veteran Daniela Iraschko-Stolz was the top performer as women made their ski jumping debut at the Olympics.
Another winter sport veteran, 42-year-old Russian luger Albert Demchenko could become the oldest Winter Olympic medallist in an individual event later today .
Luge experts have unanimously named Germany's Felix Loch as the red-hot favourite for the Olympic title, but Demchenko is also considered to be a genuine medal threat.
