Strong winds have caused problems for cars in the World Solar Challenge but the leading teams have crossed into South Australia after three days of racing from Darwin to Adelaide.

Race favourites, the Dutch Nuon team with their Nuna7 car continues to lead the way ahead of Tokai University from Japan and another Dutch university group, Solar Team Twente.

The Nuon team camped on Tuesday night about 69km north of Coober Pedy with Tokai about 20km behind.

Team Twente trailed by another 120km.

Organisers expect the leaders to reach the finish line in Adelaide on Thursday morning, but that might depend on weather conditions with another day of high winds and high temperatures forecast for much of South Australia on Wednesday.
