Solar, wind to power Tas Flinders Island

Renewable energy will feed the majority of Flinders Island's electricity needs within two years under government plans for wind and solar power.

Tasmania's Flinders Island will get a bit greener with a multimillion dollar project for renewable energy sources to deliver the majority of its electricity needs.

The $13 million Flinders Island Hybrid Energy Hub Project was launched on Monday by the state government and aims to replace more than 60 per cent of the Bass Strait island's diesel-generated energy within two years.

The project will capture energy through a combination of solar and wind, and be stored in new facilities, before distribution via a sophisticated control system.
