Solidarity in rallies at ALP conference

Groups have come together outside the ALP national conference in Melbourne to seek climate change and same-sex marriage and denounce boat turn-backs.

If solidarity was sometimes missing inside Labor's national conference, this was not the case outside among the groups rallying in support of various causes.

Many switched banners and placards to support one cause after another, including climate change, marriage equality and compassion for refugees.

Climate activists kicked off a series of rallies on the second day of the conference, voicing their backing for an increase in the renewable energy target to 50 per cent by 2030.

They also called for a commitment to reduce carbon emissions by between 40 and 60 per cent by 2030.

Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugees broke into song as they joined environment groups to shift the focus to asylum seekers.

"We are not talking about turning back boats, we are talking about turning back people," Textiles, Clothing and Footwear Union national secretary Michele O'Neil told crowds outside before sharing her views on the conference floor.

Equal Love wrapped up the rallies with calls for marriage equality and support from Labor for legalising same-sex marriage.
