The son of a Toowoomba couple killed in the downing of flight MH17 wants peace to be brokered at the crash site so all bodies can be recovered.

Paul Guard, son of Roger and Jill Guard, said Thursday's national memorial service for MH17 victims helped with the healing process for victims' families.

"It was a great opportunity to pause and reflect, and I thought all of the words spoken by all of the dignitaries and from the religious representatives were very appropriate," Mr Guard told reporters after the service in Melbourne.

"It was a good event for us as part of the healing process."

Mr Guard said it was disappointing to hear news from Ukraine overnight that fighting had again interrupted the recovery efforts, and investigations, at the crash site.

"I wish the Australian government or the UN or world leaders were able to somehow bring an end to the violence because it would be just horrific for my parents if they knew what was going on," he said.

"It's horrible - I know everyone is trying to do the best they can to bring to bring everyone home and we just feel for all the other families and all the other people in the Ukraine who are suffering.

"I think there is a role for the UN and I think the emphasis needs to be on getting the people who are fighting to stop and talk to each other and try to find a political solution."
