Son of WA's police chief faces court

The son of WA's police chief is a "man capable of extreme violence", prosecutors say, but a magistrate has still granted him home detention.

A magistrate has granted the West Australian police commissioner's son home detention despite prosecutors describing him as a "man capable of extreme violence".

Russell O'Callaghan, 34, was granted home detention under strict conditions while he awaits trial on seven charges including threats to kill, aggravated indecent assault and deprivation of liberty.

O'Callaghan, who appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Friday via video link from Casuarina prison, must remain at his address unless attending court-approved meetings.

He will also be under electronic surveillance and be prohibited from taking illicit drugs.

O'Callaghan's defence lawyer told the court O'Callaghan was undergoing treatment and home detention would detect relapse early.

But the prosecutor opposed the application, saying O'Callaghan was capable of extreme violence.

Magistrate Steven Malley noted that O'Callaghan had breached two violence restraining orders in the past, but did not fully agree with the prosecutor's claim.

The magistrate warned O'Callaghan that if he was caught taking illicit drugs he would forfeit any bail rights he had.

O'Callaghan said he took the warning seriously.

Police commissioner Karl O'Callaghan has refused to comment on the case because it is before the courts but has said he is staying out of the police investigation.

O'Callaghan will appear in court again on September 9.
