An elderly woman has died and her son has been taken to hospital after a blaze engulfed the woman's house in Sydney's west.

An elderly woman has died after fire broke out in her Sydney house, while her son suffered burns trying to put out the blaze.

Emergency workers were called to Lorraine Street at North Strathfield about 10.40pm on Monday and found the house engulfed in flames.

Firefighters rescued a woman, believed to be in her 90s, from inside who was suffering critical injuries, but she died.
