Sonny Bill returns to boost Chiefs

Sonny Bill Williams returns to inside centre for the Chiefs in their Super Rugby match against competition leaders the Hurricanes in New Plymouth.

All Blacks midfielder Sonny Bill Williams returns to Super Rugby after a six-week absence for the Chiefs when they play the Hurricanes in New Plymouth on Saturday.

Williams has been sidelined with a back problem since the Chiefs' 16-15 loss to the Rebels in Melbourne in round 12, and will play at inside centre outside five-eighth Marty McKenzie.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie has made multiple changes from the run-on team which last week downed the Reds 24-3 in Brisbane.

Pauliasi Manu, Quentin MacDonald and Ben Tameifuna combine in the starting front row with Hika Elliot being rested, while Matt Symons also returns from a concussion lay-off at lock.

Japan captain Michael Leitch will shift to flanker while All Black Sam Cane takes his second pre-arranged break, and Ma'ama Vaipulu will wear the No.8 jersey.

Brad Weber takes over starting halfback duties this week, while James Lowe and Hosea Gear are bracketed on the wing.

Seven different players are added to the reserves: Taranaki's Rhys Marshall and Mitch Crosswell will join Siate Tokolahi, Jamie Mackintosh, Michael Fitzgerald, Augustine Pulu and Andrew Horrell on the bench.

Chiefs: Tom Marshall, Bryce Heem, Charlie Ngatai, Sonny Bill Williams, James Lowe/Hosea Gear, Marty McKenzie, Brad Weber, Ma'ama Vaipulu, Michael Leitch, Liam Messam, Brodie Retallick, Matt Symons, Ben Tameifuna, Quentin MacDonald, Pauliasi Manu.
