The son of slain police informer Terence Hodson has been admitted to a Melbourne hospital, delaying the inquest into his parents' murders.

An inquest into the deaths of Terence and Christine Hodson, who were found shot dead at their Kew home in May 2004, was due to conclude on Wednesday.

But the illness of their son Andrew Hodson, a key witness, has forced a two-week adjournment.

Andrew Hodson's lawyer Avi Furstenberg told the Victorian Coroners Court his client was suffering a serious illness and might require surgery.

State Coroner Judge Ian Gray adjourned the inquest until August 15, but said it was crucial that Mr Hodson enter the witness box.

"It will assist me to hear from him. He is required to give evidence," Judge Gray said.

The inquest has previously heard that Mr Hodson was examined as a possible suspect in his parents' murder.

Former homicide squad detective Cameron Davey said he did not believe Mr Hodson was personally responsible for his parents' murder, but may have inadvertently leaked crucial information about the layout and security of their home.

Judge Gray invited the Hodsons' daughters, Mandy Hodson and Nicola Komiazyk, to make a statement at the final day of the inquest.

"If they wish to say something about their parents, they could," he said.
