South Africa set 259 to beat Vics

South African Test aspirant Tabraiz Shamsi has taken 4-72 as Victoria recovered from a bad start at the MCG to make 258 in their one-day pink-ball clash.

Victoria have recovered from a bad start to make 258 in their one-day cricket match against South Africa at the MCG.

The tourists' top order will now get a chance in the middle against the pink ball under lights as they prepare for their historic day-night Test against Australia next week in Adelaide.

Young Victorian batsmen Seb Gotch (53), Matthew Short (52) and Sam Harper (41) provided the backbone of the innings before allrounder Evan Gulbis smashed 53 from 28 balls at No.8.

The tourists had a good look at left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi as they consider giving him his Test debut in Adelaide.

He bowled for 12 overs in the 50-over game and took 4-72.

In-form Test paceman Kagiso Rabada (3-37) snared veteran openers Rob Quiney and Aaron Finch and then dismissed Ian Holland to leave Victoria reeling at 3-47.

Gotch and Short steadied the innings with a 79-run stand.

Two balls after Short brought up his 50 with a boundary off Keshav Maharaj, the spinner bowled him around his legs and the Victorian bashed his bat into the turf with frustration.

Gotch then combined with Harper for a 59-run stand.

Harper played on to give Shamsi his first wicket, the first of three quick wickets to the left-armer.

He also bowled Blake Thomson for four and Gotch lbw to leave Victoria 7-196.

Gulbis then belted two sixes and six fours to flesh out the innings as the Victorians were dismissed in the 46th over.
