South Australia risks an exodus of young people not seen since the collapse of the State Bank in the 1990s unless it creates more job opportunities, new research suggests.

The number of workers aged 15 to 64 is growing at half the national rate and South Australia is being left with a burgeoning aging population, according to the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies.

Executive director Michael O'Neil says more training opportunities for young people and an uptick in skilled migration could help get SA's economy back on track.

"We're trying to transform the economy from old manufacturing to advanced manufacturing and renewables. These are the industries of young people and young ideas and we're losing that population," he told AAP on Tuesday.

"We need to make it much, much cheaper for young people to be attending TAFE. We really need to boost our overseas migration."

SA's State Bank collapsed in 1991 with about $3 billion in bad debts, resulting in a significant economic downturn.
