Long-serving South Australian MP Bob Such has died at the age of 70 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour six months ago.

South Australian MP Bob Such has died aged 70.

Dr Such's family released a statement to say the MP, who has held the seat of Fisher since 1989, died on Saturday morning after being diagnosed with a brain tumour six months ago.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill says he's passed on the community's gratitude to Dr Such's wife, Lyn, for his extraordinary contribution to public life.

"Bob was a kind and thoughtful man who dedicated his life to public service," Mr Weatherill said.

State Liberal leader Steven Marshall said Dr Such was an outstanding member of parliament, revealing the veteran MP had provided him with advice and mentorship on the workings of parliament.

"Bob was a parliamentarian of great dignity and principle," Mr Marshall said.

"He pursued his policy passions with enthusiasm and his contribution to South Australian politics will endure into the future."

During his political career Dr Such served as Employment Minister, Training and Further Education and Minister for Youth Affairs and a former Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees and Speaker of the House of Assembly.

A private funeral will be followed by a public celebration of his life at a later date.
