Souths must play for each other: Sutton

Recalled South Sydney five-eighth John Sutton says the out-of-form NRL premiers need to get back to playing for each other.

Recalled Rabbitohs veteran John Sutton believes the battling NRL premiers need to follow the example set by defensive kingpins St George Illawarra when they meet the high-flying Dragons next Monday.

Sutton, who has been sidelined since round two with a jaw injury, has been named at five-eighth in the Souths team for the match at ANZ Stadium.

Sutton and halfback Luke Keary, who missed the City-Country game last weekend with a foot injury, will undergo a final test later this week but coach Michael Maguire expects both men to play.

Souths are in need of a lift after slumping to sixth following three successive losses.

Conversely, the resurgent Dragons have won six straight and are second to Brisbane on for-and-against differential.

Souths have conceded almost twice as many points as the Dragons' competition-leading defence, which has given up only 32 points in their last five games.

"They are all playing for each other, scrambling for each other making sure they are not letting each other down," Sutton said.

"That's what we're going to have to get back to, making sure we play for each other.

"We had 26 points scored in the second half against us last week and that's just not good enough here at Souths, so we're looking at turning it around."

Sutton nominated improved execution and completing sets as the keys to a form turnaround for Souths.

He doesn't believe it's a case of the Rabbitohs having to deal with a rare bout of adversity after a golden period in which they won the 2014 NRL title and this year's World Club Challenge and Auckland Nines tournament.

"I don't see it like that, I see it as a good challenge for us," Sutton said.

"The boys have had a few days off and are all looking ready to rip in this week at training and prepare well for the Dragons."

With halfback Adam Reynolds still recovering from a knee injury, Sutton emphasised the need for the Rabbitohs' other playmakers to pick up the slack in the tactical kicking department.

"I reckon he (Reynolds) has one of the best kicking games in the competition," Sutton said.

"But in saying that we've got other options. Issac (Luke), Greg (Inglis) and Luke (Keary) have all got to put their hand up and play a part there."
