South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds is an unlikely starter for Thursday's crucial round 25 NRL clash with Canterbury due to a hamstring complaint.

Reynolds sustained the injury late in the Rabbitohs' 22-10 loss to North Queensland on Saturday at ANZ Stadium and limped from the field in the 70th minute.

Given the short turnaround for the match against the Bulldogs, Souths coach Michael Maguire will likely be forced to turn to a makeshift halves combination with captain John Sutton still sidelined with a knee injury.

Centre Dylan Walker, who has played at pivot previously this season, shapes as a likely starter alongside Luke Keary.

"It was more of a spasm from what I've been told, but we'll have to have the scans and check tomorrow," Maguire said of Reynolds.

The Souths No.7 suffered a serious hamstring injury in the Rabbitohs' preliminary final loss to Canterbury at ANZ Stadium in 2011.

Souths will welcome George Burgess back from suspension for a chicken wing tackle to meet the Dogs.

But Maguire was less certain on Sutton.

"We are not quite sure, but he is improving every day, he is pencilled in as a possibility but we will have to wait and see how the injury turns out," he said.

Souths missed a golden chance to move to the top of the NRL ladder with a win over the Cowboys, following Manly's loss to Parramatta on Friday night.

The Rabbitohs could relinquish second spot if Penrith account for Melbourne on Monday night.
