Spanish heatwave blamed for three deaths

Record temperatures being recorded in Spain are believed to be responsible for three recent deaths.

Two more people have died during a heatwave in Spain, media reports say, bringing the total number of deaths being blamed on the recent unseasonably hot weather to three.

The latest deaths occurred near the eastern port city of Valencia on Thursday, the newspaper Levante EMV reported, as the temperature there rose to a blistering 42 degrees Centigrade - the highest in May since records began more than 140 years ago, according to weather experts.

Those who died were identified as a 62-year-old Spanish man, and a 47-year-old Romanian.

On Wednesday, a workman died in Badajoz, in south-west Spain.

In recent days a temperature of 44.4 degrees centigrade was recorded in Carcaixent, south of Valencia - the hottest spot in the whole country.

Temperatures tumbled markedly on Friday.
