Spending trend continues in November

Business sales dipped in November but Australians are still confident in their spending habits, with the trend remaining strong.

Australian consumers are still confident with their money despite a dip in spending last month.

Spending fell 0.8 per cent in November, seasonally adjusted, but the trend remains strong, according to Commonwealth Bank's business sales indicator (BSI).

Spending grew by 0.4 per cent in trend terms for the month, continuing uninterrupted economy-wide spending growth back to mid-2011.

Business spending, retail and hotels all posted growth in the lead up to Christmas, with spending up in tourism-based industries thanks to the low Australian dollar.

The annual rate is sales growth of 7.3 per cent in trend terms, remaining well above the decade-average of 5.1 per cent, the study found.

CommSec market analyst Savanth Sebastian said another consecutive month of growth shows the economy is rebalancing as the mining boom fades.

"The strong growth in business services and tourism-based sectors should leave businesses and government optimistic that the economy remains resilient and adaptable heading into 2016," he said.

The BSI tracks the value of credit at debit card transactions on Commonwealth Bank merchant facilities throughout Australia.
