A parade, a concert and fireworks are on Adelaide's agenda for Australia Day, but unofficially many folk will celebrate by watching international cricket and cycling.
The fifth one day international match between Australia and England will take place at Adelaide Oval, while Sunday will be Stage 6 of the Tour Down Under cycling race.
The official program will culminate in fireworks being set off from the roof of the Adelaide Convention Centre for the first time.
They will be the grand finale to the organised celebrations, beginning with a 6pm (CDT) parade featuring more than 150 community groups from Victoria Square to Elder Park, followed by a free family concert.
Australia Day Council of SA executive Matt Miles says more than 1000 community events will be held throughout the state, while 35,000 people are expected to attend the Elder Park celebrations.
There will be 41 citizenship ceremonies across SA, involving 1400 people from 82 countries.
As well as the Elder Park events, a Snazzy Sizzle gourmet barbecue and party will be held nearby on the Riverbank promenade.
"Fireworks off the roof of the Convention Centre is ambitious and has never been attempted, but with great co-operation between parties we've been able to make it happen for this year's event, which is very exciting," Mr Miles said.
The APRA award-winning dance and singing star Timomatic will headline the concert with support by Sarah De Bono.
Other events include the City of Onkaparinga Australia Day Bush Fair, a breakfast barbecue at the Old Timers Mine car park at Coober Pedy and the 21st Australia Day Fun Run at Meningie.
Assistant commissioner Bronwyn Killmier says police will focus on crowd and road safety, on what will be one of Adelaide's biggest and busiest weekends.
"We'll have a highly visible police presence at events and patrolling roads to ensure crowd safety and traffic flow, but the responsibility for driving safely and lawfully and acting in a socially responsible manner at events is an individual choice," she said.
"Don't spoil someone else's day or turn a good day bad by drinking too much.
"Police will take necessary action and intervene at early signs of any trouble, so don't ruin your Australia Day."
