Sport divided on Scott's Olympic skip

Australian Olympians and international golf stars have responded with mixed views on Adam Scott's decision to give the Rio Games a miss.

HOW AUSTRALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL SPORT REACTED TO ADAM SCOTT'S DECISION TO MISS THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES

"I think that's sad. I think it's sad for the Olympics and for the game of golf. What I'm concerned about is that golf has a little bit of momentum going right now. If the guys don't want to participate, then we might not be in the Olympics after this." - American Jack Nicklaus, who has won 18 majors.

"Well done Adam great to put your country on hold so that you can fulfil your own schedule ... How much money do you want in life? Not showing much for your country." - Dawn Fraser, champion swimmer and Australia's second-most successful Olympian of all-time.

"This is why golf should not be an Olympic sport. It isn't the pinnacle." - Swimmer Melanie Wright, who won a gold medal at the London 2012 Games.

"Playing for your country is a lot bigger than playing for yourself ... I would say I don't care how tired you are, and I wouldn't even care where you place in the tournament, but you need to be there to represent your country." - American Johnny Miller, who won two majors in the 1970s, and is the lead golf analyst for NBC.

"He's not letting the country down. He's not letting the Olympics down." - Australian golfing great Jack Newton, responding to the criticism of Scott.

"I think in time he may regret that decision, because the Olympics is not just about the competition. The spirit of the Games, the opportunity to share that experience with the best athletes in the world." - Australian basketball legend Andrew Gaze, who carried the flag for Australia at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

"Well I was never too busy to go to the Olympics. I don't think it's about the money, it's an attitudinal thing and I don't hold it against Adam ... That's his choice. It's not what I would do, but it's his prerogative." - Australian marathon runner Steve Moneghetti, who competed in four Olympics between 1988 and 2000, told Fairfax media.

"Adam Scott represents his country by coming back to AUS every year and playing events to build the sport... What else do you want! #respect" - senior Australian golfer James Nitties on Twitter.
