AFL - The most-talked about selection dilemma of the AFL season is over, with Hawthorn livewire Cyril Rioli named to play in Saturday's grand final for his first top level game since round 15.

RUGBY LEAGUE - The end is nigh for at least one of the NRL's biggest superstars, with rugby union-bound duo Sonny Bill Williams and Sam Burgess squaring off in Friday night's preliminary final between South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters.

CYCLING - Cadel Evans has announced he'll retire from cycling after competing in Australia in early 2015, the 37-year-old admitting his decision was partly due to a poor Giro d'Italia where he targeted the win but finished eighth.

GOLF - Top-ranked Rory McIlroy partners Sergio Garcia for the first time on Friday, with the pair to take on unbeaten US duo Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley in a critical opening fourball showdown at the Ryder Cup.

CRICKET - British prosecutors have charged New Zealand cricket great Chris Cairns with perjury in relation to a 2012 libel action that Cairns successfully brought against former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi.
