NRL - A Fairfax Media report suggests some Cronulla players accused of taking performance-enhancing drugs in 2011 could escape with bans as little as four weeks - which could be served during the NRL off-season.

AFL - Hawthorn dropped out of the AFL top two after a 19-point defeat to Fremantle in Sunday's grand final re-match at Patersons Stadium, and they could slip as low as fourth if they lose to bogey team Geelong in Saturday's blockbuster at the MCG.

SOCCER - Manchester City and Liverpool were both made to sweat before opening their campaigns with hard-fought victories on Sunday, the two title rivals joining five other teams, including Arsenal, on maximum points, ahead of their showdown at the Etihad Stadium.

CRICKET - Sunil Gavaskar accused India of "embarrassing the country" after their humiliating innings and 244-run defeat by England in the fifth Test at The Oval, the second time in as many matches that India had been beaten inside three days as England won the five-match series 3-1.

MOTORSPORT - Dani Pedrosa ended Honda teammate Marc Marquez's hopes of setting a record 11 straight MotoGP wins with victory in the Czech Republic MotoGP in Brno, Marquez missing the podium with Yamaha duo Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi finishing second and third respectively.
