SURFING - Australian Tyler Wright has to wait at least another week to claim the 2016 world surfing crown after losing the final at Cascais in Portugal to closest championship rival Courtney Conlogue of the US.

SOCCER - Second-tier English club Barnsley has fired assistant coach Tommy Wright following a UK Daily Telegraph sting apparently showing him accepting money to help place players at the club. It comes two days after Sam Allardyce lost his job as England manager after a sting by the same newspaper.

TENNIS - Bernard Tomic has edged out America's Ryan Harrison in three sets to book a quarter-final spot at the Shenzhen Open in China.

SOCCER - Italian giants Inter Milan face a huge battle to get through Europa League group stage after slumping to a 3-1 defeat at Sparta Prague. Manchester United overcame Ukranian side FC Zorya Luhansk 1-0, Ajax beat Standard Liege 1-0, Southampton drew 0-0 with Israel's Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Fenerbahce beat Feyenoord 1-0.

TENNIS - Fourth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep has advanced to the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open with a 6-4 6-2 win over American Madison Keys. Halep meets Petra Kvitova in the semis.

SOCCER - Legia Warsaw have been told by UEFA to play their next Champions League home game against Real Madrid behind closed doors following racist behaviour and other crowd disturbances against Borussia Dortmund.

OLYMPICS - Rome has officially withdrawn its bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games after the city council voted to follow Mayor Virginia Raggi in opposition.

TENNIS - US Open champion Stan Wawrinka has been forced to withdraw from next week's Japan Open due to a back injury.
