CRICKET - Aaron Finch has scored an emotional and historic 121 to guide Australia to a six-wicket win in the opening one-day international against England at the MCG.

TENNIS - The Australian Open gets underway on Monday with seven Australians in action, including the nation's only seed in Samantha Stosur, who plays Czech Klara Zakopalova, with teenager Ashleigh Barty facing a night date with world No.1 Serena Williams.

SOCCER - Manchester City have taken over at the top of the Premier League table after a 2-0 win over Newcastle, while Liverpool overcame Stoke City 5-3 to return to the top four.

CYCLING - Simon Gerrans out-duelled fellow Tour de France stars Cadel Evans and Richie Porte to win the men's elite road race at the Australian road cycling championships.

GOLF - Defending champion Louis Oosthuizen has retained his title at the Volvo Golf Champions event in his native South Africa after shooting a final-round 68 to finish at 12-under-par.
